What you will need

IMPORTANT: MLA 9 requires a DOI or URL for articles found in a database. A DOI is preferred. If not available, use the stable URL or permalink. Include the http:// or https:// for DOIs. Do not copy and paste the browser URL.  

To cite a magazine, journal or newspaper article from an online database, provide the following:

  1. The author of the article.
  2. Title of the article in quotes.
  3. Name of the journal, magazine or newspaper italicized
  4. Date of publication.
  5. page number (s) when available.
  6. Name of the database italicized.
  7. URL or DOI.

Journal article with no DOI

Author's Last Name, First Name. "Title of Article: Subtitle if Any." Name of Journal (italicized), vol. Volume Number, no. Issue Number, Date of Publication, pp. First Page Number-Last Page Number. Name of Database (italicized), URL or Permalink.

Journal article with a DOI

Author's Last Name, First Name. "Title of Article: Subtitle if Any." Name of Journal (italicized), vol. number, issue number, Date of Publication, pp. First Page Number-Last Page Number. Name of Database (italicized), https://doi number.
